ghetto mentality

I do this program through our church where displaced families come into the church and live for a week. They are fed three round meals a day and their kids still can go to school during the day while they head out and try to find housing, jobs etc. They prep the hosts by having them watch a video which is really helpful about not asking the clients too much about their personal lives, why they are in the situation and things like that. (Obvious stuff) I think generally you go into a program like this because you know it does help them. You cannot help but to pass some judgment on people who are wearing more expensive clothes than you are, not attending to their children, ignoring basic disciplinary skills, not abiding by the rules. I think that in this situation, I have had some prejudicial feelings against “low-income” or this a.k.a. ghetto mentality. I felt that there was a consistent general feeling that I took away that the clients, despite this dire time in their lives, tend to work the system, find the easy way out and ignore the realities of their situation.
